Understanding the HYPRO 300’s Timber Capacity
The HYPRO 300 is designed to process timber between 3cm and 30cm in diameter, making it particularly relevant to forestry thinning and smaller woodland management operations. However, diameter is only part of the picture. Tree species, stem straightness, branch thickness and timber condition all influence how easily a tree can be processed. For this reason, smaller, relatively straight conifers are generally a good starting point when considering where the HYPRO 300 fits.
Sitka Spruce – A Particularly Good Match
Sitka Spruce is one of the most widely planted commercial forestry species across Ireland and the UK, making it a natural starting point when looking at the HYPRO 300. During thinning operations, smaller trees are selectively removed to create space for the remaining trees to develop. Where stems are within the machine’s processing capacity and branch sizes are manageable, the HYPRO 300 can offer a practical way of delimbing and cross-cutting felled Sitka Spruce. For operators working in spruce plantations, particularly during earlier thinning operations, it’s certainly a machine worth considering.

Norway Spruce – Well Suited to Smaller Stems
Norway Spruce is another conifer that can be a good match for this type of processing. It’s generally straight growth makes smaller stems suitable candidates for mechanical delimbing and cross-cutting, provided the timber remains within the HYPRO 300’s working limits. For woodland owners managing Norway Spruce stands, the HYPRO 300 offers an option for processing timber without investing in a dedicated harvester.

Scots Pine – A Practical Option for Thinning
Scots Pine is commonly found in both commercial and mixed woodland settings. Smaller Scots Pine stems may be suitable for the HYPRO 300, particularly when they’re relatively straight and have manageable branches. As with other species, the key consideration is not simply whether the stem falls within the 30cm diameter capacity, but whether its branch structure allows it to pass effectively through the delimbing system.

Larch – Depending on Stem and Branch Characteristics
Larch is another species worth considering, particularly for lighter thinning work.
Smaller, straighter stems can be suitable for mechanical processing, although branch size and the form of individual trees will influence performance.
For operators working with Larch, assessing the timber itself is more useful than relying on species alone.

What About Birch and Other Hardwoods?
Although the HYPRO 300 is a particularly natural fit for smaller conifers, some hardwoods may also be suitable. Birch, for example, often produces relatively slender stems and can be a candidate for mechanical processing where branches are manageable. However, hardwoods can present additional challenges. Irregular growth, heavier branching, forks and curved stems can make mechanical delimbing more difficult. Oak, Beech and larger hardwoods would generally not be our first recommendation for this machine, particularly where the timber is heavily branched or irregular in shape.
Why the HYPRO 300 Makes Sense for Thinning Operations
One of the HYPRO 300’s biggest advantages is that it allows operators to make use of a tractor they may already own. Mounted on the tractor’s three-point linkage, the machine has its own hydraulic system, powered through the tractor’s PTO. Its integrated hydraulic winch draws previously felled timber towards the processor, where the operator can delimb and cut it to the required length. The machine can also mechanically stack the processed timber, reducing some of the manual handling involved in traditional processing methods.
Some useful HYPRO 300 specifications include:
- Timber processing diameter: 3-30 cm
- Minimum tractor power: 50 hp
- Machine weight: approximately 800kg
- Integrated winch pulling force: 1.5 tonnes
- Winch rope length: 35 metres
- Three driven feed wheels
- Feed rate: over 3 metres per second
For farmers, estate owners, woodland managers and smaller forestry contractors, it presents an alternative to relying entirely on manual timber processing.
